About

A history of Commons

Commons was born out of a simple idea: "The perfect blend of restaurant, bar, and café. A place where you can feel comfortable enjoying a coffee during the day, a meal at any time, and a drink in the evening." Inspired by the timeless European tradition of communal dining, we wanted to bring our version of that to Dunedin.

Our journey began with a fond admiration of the few hospitality outlets nationwide that can cater to multiple moments. Whether it’s a leisurely brunch with friends, a quick bite before exploring the gallery, an intimate dinner, or beers & cocktails with mates we envisioned a place that adapts to any moment. A space that welcomes all. It’s not just about the food; it’s about the experience of being comfortable, feeling looked after and relaxing.

The menu reflects our love for European food. Think fresh ingredients, simple and fun. Using as many small and local suppliers as we can, our menu works work for those who want to have a sharing dining experience, as well as those who don’t. Commons was born to be more than just a space; it’s a crossroads of restaurants, bars and cafes. Warm and inviting in the daytime, cozy and upbeat in the evening.”
